THE NEW Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) ambition of winning this year’s elections to restore better governance and bring renaissance to the crippling economy, received a massive boost in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital, on Saturday.

Thousands of party loyalists and sympathizers queued to donate huge amounts of money and other valuable logistics during a fundraising ceremony to help the party campaign effectively to wrestle political power from the Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.

Notable among the people that donated towards the party’s campaign were head porters, locally referred to as ‘kayayie,’ most of who live in slums, having migrated from the northern parts of the country to Kumasi for ‘greener pastures.’

Even though scores of people donated colossal amounts of money, the GH¢5,000 which was donated by the head porters received the loudest applause by the charged party members that witnessed the historic event.

Even before Adiza Zongo Pioneer, who led the head porters, could finish with her statement, the entire crowd at the VIP section of the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, shouted in ecstasy.

Some of the party members had earlier donated monies exceeding GH¢50,000 but the crowd seemed more satisfied with the humble donation of the head porters. The shouts that greeted their donation nearly turned the venue upside down. But it was understandable, considering the fact that they (porters), who are mostly teenagers, are impoverished with no prosperity in sight for them under the current NDC administration.

Adiza said the head porters had realized that the NPP, under the leadership of Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia, is the only party that can save the country from its immense troubles.

.

She said the money was to help lubricate the NPP’s campaign machinery so that the party would go to every nook and cranny of the country to canvass for more votes.

Several individuals donated monies exceeding GH¢20,000 but they did not want their names to be mentioned for obvious reasons, Stephen Amoah aka Sticker, acting Ashanti Regional organizer of the party, told the teeming crowd.

Among those that wanted their names to be mentioned were the Ashanti Regional NPP MPs and parliamentary aspirants, who donated GH¢50,000 and former Defence Minister, Dr. Kwame Addo Kufuor, GH¢5,000.

Greater Accra and Eastern Regional branches of the party donated GH¢30,000 and GH¢50,000 respectively, whilst several other people including a brother of Bernard Antwi Boasiako aka Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, donated GH¢10,000.

The historic event saw party people and sympathizers buying tickets, with face values GH¢20, GH¢50, GH¢100 and above, before they could enter the event venue.

The programme was graced by the flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo; his running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; acting NPP National Chairman, Freddie Blay; national and Ashanti Regional executives.

Wontumi stated that the programme was organized to enable every NPP member to donate cash to support the party realize its ambition of unseating the NDC administration later this year.
