A yet-to-be identified man suspected to be a thief was yesterday electrocuted when he tried to remove some parts of a transformer at the Police Post end of Trassaco, Off the Spintex Road in Accra.

A landlady in the vicinity, Madam Fatima Peregrino Alhassan said she discovered a sudden power outage and concluded that it was dumsor only to realize later that a man was lying dead near a transformer.

She quickly called a DAILY GUIDE staff and told him about the spectacle. The staff in turn contacted the Greater Accra Regional Commander COP Dr. George Dampare who directed the appropriate crime scene personnel to the scene.

“The speed with which the Greater Accra Police Commander reacted when he was contacted was amazing. When our public officers work like this many of our problems would have been solved” she said.

It was obvious that it was the thief’s tampering with the equipment in his bid to have access to the copper component which led to the power outage to the neighbourhood.

The ECG Accra East’s PRO, Mrs. Grace Garshong remarked that some power outages are caused when bad elements seek to steal valuable components of their equipment.

She added “when members of the public witness strange persons loitering around ECG installations or equipment with no form of identification associating them with the Company, such persons should be challenged and where possible handed over to law enforcement agents.”

Curious residents in the neighbourhood trooped to the scene to catch a glimpse of the remains of the thief before he was sent to the Police Hospital for autopsy.
