Four inmates of the Sunyani Prison in the Brong Ahafo have performed excellently in the 2015 November/December West African Senior School Certification Examination (WASSCE).

An inmate recorded 5 As in all 5 subjects. Another one obtained 3 As in three subjects.

Two others- Nyatse Dennis and Jonathan Ziri Sonnawe performed creditably in all subjects.

Prison authorities expressed happiness with the results because they were able to obtain good results despite their incarceration and the related psychological trauma

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, Public Relation Officer (PRO) of Sunyani Prisons, ASP Ziem said many inmates could have written the 2014/ 2015 WAEC exams if the prison had more classrooms, books, white board and markers.

ASP Ziem said the move was an initiative of the Rotary Club in collaboration of the prison authorities.

The club, he said, provides the teaching learning materials while some officers offer tuition in the prison.

According to him, the opportunity is open to all inmates who are interested and willing to learn.

Their tutor, Sergeant Francis Naapol told DAILY GUIDE they hold classes every day except on Sundays and public holidays.

They also write exams every two weeks. What is even interesting and surprising is that two of them do not have JHS background but had to learn from the scratch. The other two meanwhile had SHS background.  Their happiness has been short-lived because of where they find themselves, he added.

Authorities called on government to offer distance education to enable them continue to the tertiary level in order to make their time in prison worthwhile.
