United hit back thanks to fine work by Martial who found Rooney, with the striker’s smart flick beating goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.
Arsenal opened up a two-point lead at the top of the table as they claimed an unconvincing 1-0 win over Newcastle United at Emirates Stadium.

West Ham United 2-0 Liverpool FT
Michail Antonio and Andy Carroll scored headed goals as West Ham Uniteddefeated Liverpool 2-0 at Upton Park in the day’s early kickoff.
West Ham took the lead in the 10th minute when Antonio headed in powerfully from Enner Valencia’s fantastic cross.
Manuel Lanzini then struck the woodwork for the Hammers with a swerving effort, and then up the other end Emre Can’s effort clipped the top of the crossbar before half-time.
Carroll put West Ham 2-0 up 10 minutes into the second half with another superb header from Mark Noble’s delivery into the box.
Leicester City 0-0 AFC Bournemouth FT
Riyad Mahrez failed to score a second-half penalty as high-flying Leicester City were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Bournemouth.
Bournemouth goalkeeper Artur Boruc denied Mahrez from the penalty spot after Jamie Vardy was adjudged to have been brought down by Simon Francis, who received a red card.
The Foxes are now three top-flight games without a win after losing at Liverpool and drawing at home to Manchester City.
West Bromwich Albion 2-1 Stoke City FT
An injury-time goal from Jonny Evans saw West Bromwich Albion beat in-form Stoke City 2-1 at The Hawthorns.
West Brom broke the deadlock on the hour mark when Stephane Sessegnon received James Morrison’s pass and then powered home.
Jonathan Walters equalised for Stoke with nine minutes left on the clock, heading in Joselu’s cross from the left.
Stoke were reduced to 10 men when Geoff Cameron reacted to a challenge from Claudio Yacob, and West Brom struck late with Evans scoring from close range.
Sunderland 3-1 Aston Villa FT
Sunderland ended a run of five straight losses with a 3-1 triumph over Aston Villa at the Stadium of Light.
Villa went behind on 30 minutes when Patrick van Aanholt’s deflected shot beat goalkeeper Brad Guzan.
The visitors responded through Carles Gil who met Adama Traore’s cross to the back post with a tremendous volley on 63 minutes.
Sunderland retook the lead in the 72nd minute when Jermain Defoe latched onto Adam Johnson’s pass before finishing into the corner.
Defoe grabbed his second of the game in injury time to wrap up the three points as he finished in clinical fashion.
Norwich City 1-0 Southampton FT
Norwich City made it back-to-back wins with a 1-0 victory over out-of-formSouthampton at Carrow Road.
Shortly after Southampton’s Victor Wanyama received a second yellow card, Norwich made their numerical advantage pay as Alexander Tettey found the top corner.
