Andre Ayew fails to inspire struggling Swansea City after latest Manchester United defeat left side above drop zone

Andre Ayew put up a decent performance for Swansea City but his struggling side suffered a morale-dampening 2-1 defeat at Manchester United to leave them just above the relegation zone.

The Ghana international lasted 82 minutes as the Welsh side suffered yet another defeat and are in big trouble to avoid the drop.

The Swans, who has won their last three games against United, were hoping to continue their fairy tale at Old Trafford.

But Frenchman Antonio Martial popped up with a glancing header from close range to put United in front two minutes after the break.

But Gylfi Sigurdsson’s glancing effort provided some hope for the visitors in the 70th minutes and set nerves on edge at Old Trafford.

But Wayne Rooney’s touch of class changed the mood for the home side after he flicked home Anthony Martial’s crosss 13 minutes from time to hand under-fire manager Louis Van Gaal some respite.

They may still sit just once place above the relegation zone, but Swansea showed they have enough character and ability to beat the drop, despite coming away with nothing.
