Ghana’s minister for sports Mustapha Ahmed has stated his stance on the Black Stars’ ‘bonuses’ which has become an issue of intense public debate in recent times.
Currently receiving $10,000 per head as match winning bonus, the hullaballoo on the team’s remuneration reared its ugly head once again during Ghana’s 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifying double-header with Comoros in November when media reports speculated an imminent reduction by 50 per cent.
“If you look at the current economic hardship, then they [Black Stars] should be in an agreement for the bonus to be cut down,” Ahmed told Storm FM.
“We’re still in discussions with the players and we’ll communicate with the media and all Ghanaians soon after a decision is arrived at.
“[They’re] in Ghana for the holidays and we hope to meet them together with the GFA and settle on that.
“It is my wish that we cut the bonus down but we wouldn’t want it to be a take it or leave it matter. That is why we have kept long in arriving at a conclusion.”
With reports of an imminent slash high ahead of the Comoros tie, Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan expressed disappointment in the development, saying they are “not slaves” and could not be bullied into accepting a cut.
