Vice President of NAGRAT – Angel Carbonu<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) is kicking against a government policy not to absorb graduates from colleges of education.<\/p>\n
This government policy will ensure teachers seek their own employment following their graduation from colleges of education, a move teacher unions are opposing.<\/p>\n
Teachers were initially posted to schools upon their graduation.<\/p>\n
But the Vice President of NAGRAT, Angel Carbonu, believes this policy will create an imbalance in the teacher to pupil ratio in the urban and rural areas.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Citi News on this development, Mr. Carbonu indicated that this policy will cripple the ailing educational system.<\/p>\n
Mr Carbonu is of the view graduates of the colleges of education may be forced to leave the field of teaching if the problem is not resolved.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you don\u2019t post them, I can assure you some of those products from the colleges of education will be getting their own jobs. Some of those jobs may not be in teaching,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In cases where they remain in the education sector, he feels there may be an imbalance that will see teachers gravitate towards the urban and well-endowed areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou are going to create an imbalanced situation where the urban areas and the well-endowed schools teachers will have teachers and the deprived schools will not have teachers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMost of those teachers, when they finish the colleges of education\u2026 they will find work within the private sector, that is the private schools, so you are creating your own problem within the public sector.\u201d<\/p>\n
This education related policy introduced by government is the latest to rub the teacher unions the wrong way.<\/p>\n
Earlier this year, government scrapped the teacher trainee allowances and introduced loans for the trainees despite NAGRAT insisting the move did not favour teachers.<\/p>\n
The Ministry\u00a0of Education also took a decision to scrap the teacher\u2019s motivation allowance, a move that led the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) accusing the Minister of Education, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, of deliberately pursuing policies that make life difficult for teachers.<\/p>\n
