Officials of ActionAid Ghana and the Gender Minister and other dignitories cutting the anniversary cake.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n ActionAid Ghana, an affiliate of ActionAid, an international anti-poverty development agency has launched its 25th<\/sup> anniversary celebrations and Ghana Country Strategy Paper V.<\/p>\n Speaking in a welcome address at the launch under the theme ’25 years of fighting Poverty Together for National Development’, Board Chair of ActionAid Ghana, Marilyn Aniwa said the Strategy Paper V will drive ActionAid Ghana’s development programmes for the next five years.<\/p>\n ‘The development document comes under the name ‘Increasing Possibilities, Claiming Rights’ which was chosen to reflect the connection between basic human rights as a necessity and the enormous development possibilities that exist for us to work together to make this possible,’ she said.<\/p>\n According to her, in the next five years, ActionAid hopes to increase development possibilities for people living in poverty across the country.<\/p>\n Reflecting on the 25 years journey of the organization, she said ‘for 25 years, we have worked hard to campaign against inequitable teacher distribution, gender-based violence, child and forced marriage, marriage by abduction, gender discrimination, outmoded customary practices, female genital mutilation, witchcraft accusations and human rights violations.’<\/p>\n ‘When we started our operations in the Upper East Region in 1990, we were a small country programme working in a few communities. Today, ActionAid Ghana is an award-winning development agency working in hundreds of deprived and marginalized communities in six regions in Ghana,’ she recounted.<\/p>\n Ms. Aniwa hinted that ‘with the launch of the new development strategy, we hope to expand our operations and extend into other regions.’<\/p>\n Vice President, Paa Kwasi Amissah Arthur in a statement read on his behalf at the launch commended ActionAid Ghana for its support to the development of the poor over the years.<\/p>\n According to him, ActionAid has been active in infrastructural developments in rural areas including the construction of schools.<\/p>\n He reiterated that government was committed to partnering Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) in empowering poor persons in the country.<\/p>\n The launch was attended by heads of the various civil society organizations in Ghana and politicians including the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur.<\/p>\n About ActionAid<\/strong> The organization works with the poorest and most deprived people in Asia, Africa, Latin America and other disadvantaged and marginalized communities.<\/p>\n BY Melvin Tarlue & Kevin Trevellyan<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
