Lagos-based lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa is not impressed with the inaugural speech of President Muhammadu Buhari. He describes it as\u00a0illusory and\u00a0vague.<\/p>\n
According to him, Buhari has stated the things he plans to do but he seems to have no clue how he is going to achieve them.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have read the Inaugural Speech of the President of the Federal\u00a0Republic of Nigeria, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (Retd.), delivered\u00a0immediately after his swearing in. It is gratifying that General\u00a0Buhari has vowed to tackle the rot in the power sector, even though he\u00a0did not give any direction on how to do that. By and large, it is my\u00a0view that the President has not addressed the real issues affecting\u00a0our lives in Nigeria,\u201d Adegboruwa said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt would seem that the President is still on the soap box, whereby\u00a0promises and promises and intentions, are the order. He is the\u00a0President of Nigeria now and my expectation was that since March 28,\u00a02015, when he won the election, when he received the certificate of\u00a0return from INEC, when he got assurances from Dr. Goodluck Jonathan,\u00a0that his election would not be contested, General Buhari would have\u00a0outlined his main policy direction. But alas, that has not happened\u00a0today.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor instance, the President did not say anything on his foreign policy\u00a0directive, on issues relating to global warming and climate change,\u00a0the violence in the Middle East and the general global economic\u00a0downturn. Also, the President was silent on the mode of tackling\u00a0corruption, which indeed has been the main thrust of his\u00a0electioneering campaigns; he was silent on the collapsing aviation\u00a0sector, he kept mute on the unpaid salaries of millions of workers\u00a0across the land, the huge debts that the Jonathan administration has\u00a0bequeathed to him and indeed the main means of generating revenue, to\u00a0run his government, apart from oil. General Buhari gave no hint on the\u00a0mode of reform of the judicial system and the administration of\u00a0justice generally, the expected policy statement on NNPC did not come,\u00a0and even the Boko Haram insurgency, to which the President devoted\u00a0most of his speech, ended up in a policy disaster, of cause after\u00a0effect; in that the President will only know the cause, origin and
perspectives of the criminal organisation, only after he has succeeded\u00a0in killing them all,\u201d said Adegboruwa.<\/p>\n
Adegboruwa said the inaugural Speech became another campaign promise as it was a statement of intention without action.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was\u00a0too vague and illusory, like a speech being delivered by a novice in\u00a0power. This is the President who has ruled this country as a Head of\u00a0State, through a coup de tat in 1983, and one that has sought to rule\u00a0this nation since 2003, so he had all the time in the world, to have\u00a0mapped out his cause of action and strategies. This is surely not the\u00a0speech expected from our GMB.<\/p>\n
