Kwabena Yeboah, the president of SWAG has indicated that the Ghana Premier League (GPL) is not up to standard.
The start of the Ghana Premier League for the 2nd season running has suffered massive delay due to litigation and the organisers of the league can’t state the tentative date for its commencement.
Kwabena Yeboah has added his voice to that of the several sports journalists who have been critical of the standard and the organisation of the league, highlighting on issues like officiating, matches of convenience, the frequent attempts by local talents to seek greener pastures abroad and lack of consistency in the start of the league.
‘The Ghana Premier League is nothing to write home about. I am not convinced with officiating, it is something which needs much attention. There is also the issue of matches that people could predict their outcomes before they are played.
‘Another area that is worrying is that most of the best players in the league travel to ply their trade elsewhere because we can’t meet their financial demands.
‘We wanted to syncronise our league with the European one and we ended up delaying the league in past to meet that, but here we are that the European season is mid-season and we are here struggling to settle on a date to start the league”.
He added that the role of journalists is the least of the factors causing the decline in the standard of the league.
‘In past that the Ghana league was fascinating, there were journalists who were making several comments about the league, yet still the enthusiasm was very high, so I don’t think journalists are the reason why patronage in the league centres is low, they are the least of the factors that causing the decline of the league,’ he Kwabena Yeboah added.
