Former Director of pro-opposition think tank, Danquah Institute, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has described the work done by the five-member panel set up by the Electoral Commission (EC) to go into calls for a new voters register as a ‘shoddy’ one.

Commenting on a report submitted by the commission to the EC which said that NPP’s call for a new voters register was ‘unconvincing’, Gabby said he was not interested in the work of the commission because he knew it would present a ‘shoddy’ job.

“And you want us to praise you for this kind of shoddy job done by such a biased panel…?” he quizzed on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen Programme on Thursday.

The Commission included Professor V.C.R.A.C. Crabbe; Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante; Dr. Grace Bediako, Dr. Nii Narku Quaynor; and Maulvi Bin Salih.

The EC said it will not kowtow to pressure from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to use a new voters’ register for the 2016 elections.

According to the EC, the Independent Panel it set up to look into the concerns of stakeholders on the Voters’ Register shot down the idea hence it “accepts the recommendations.”

“The Electoral Commission will continue to engage stakeholders to ensure that a clean and credible voters’ register is in place for the 2016 general elections through an inclusive and collaborative audit process,” a statement from the EC said.

An acceptance of this ‘biased’ report, Gabby said would not augur well for the country’s democracy as according to him, the voters register is a bloated one.

“If we want to go into an election with a register which more than half of Ghanaians deem to be bloated, then it’s the EC’s own cup of tea…,” he said.
