Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says he is convinced the government of President John Dramani Mahama has nothing to campaign on in the 2016 elections.
His claim, he said, is based on the fact that the government has less achievements to justify the huge borrowing it has embarked on.
“This election is for the NPP to win. This Mahama/NDC government has nothing to campaign on. They have borrowed as if there will be no tomorrow and have mortgaged our future”, he told party delegates at its extraordinary conference in Sunyani.
Nana Addo further expressed shock at the borrowing spree embarked upon by the Mahama administration saying ‘they do so as if there is no tomorrow’.
According to the NPP flagbearer, the government has rather inflated the cost of projects all as a means of enriching themselves and their cronies.
“They have used every infrastructure project they have undertaken to enrich themselves and impoverish Ghanaians. Every classroom and hospital they have built have been at twice or three times what it should cost, every kilometer of road they have built has been at an obscene cost and our country has become a byword for corruption,” he said.
This extreme borrowing, Nana Addo said has led to the untold hardships in the country thus leading Ghanaians to clamour for change in the 2016 elections.
“Ghanaians are anxious for change. Ghanaians, especially the youth, need to have hope again. We of the NPP have a good story to tell. I am ready and eager to lead us for that change. Together we will bring that change to Ghana.…,” he said at the conference where he inaugurated his campaign team.
Nana Addo further rejected the much-touted notion that he cannot with certain persons in his party hence their suspension.
“I reject out rightly the malicious refrain that I decide people in the NPP that I can work with and those that I cannot work with…my training and practice as a lawyer and politician thrives on divergent opinion. I have worked with people whose politics I do not like. When I was in parliament I worked with different people different committees and we produced works that we were all proud of.
“I, however, cannot accept and tolerate members who work to derail the party’s chances of winning the elections. It is important to note that in the NPP nobody is above the law including myself,” the former attorney said Saturday at the extraordinary congress of the elephant at Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo region.
