Madrid, Dec. 18, (GNA/dpa) – Holders Barcelona will face crosstown rivals Espanyol in the round of 16 of the Spanish Cup, according to the draw made Friday by the Spanish football federation.
The first leg will be at Barca’s Camp Nou January 6, just three days after Barca visit Espanyol’s Cornella stadium for a league clash. The second leg will be at Cornella January 13.
Barca have won the cup a record 27 times and beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1 in last season’s final. Espanyol have won it four times, the last time in 2006.
Friday’s draw threw up three local derbies in all, the other being Rayo Vallecano v Atletico Madrid and Real Betis v Sevilla.
The other ties are Valencia v Granada, Mirandes v Deportivo La Coruna, Athletic Bilbao v Villarreal, Eibar v Las Palmas and Cadiz v Celta Vigo.
Cadiz remain in the competition because Real Madrid fielded an ineligible player Denis Cheryshev against them in the fourth round, leading to their expulsion from the competition.
Real have appealed twice against the expulsion but to no avail. According to AS and Marca Friday, they are now considering taking the case to the Spanish law courts, something that no club has ever done before.
