Eric Afful retains Amenfi West seat for NDC

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Eric Afful has been elected as Member of Parliament for the Amenfi West Constituency in the Western Region.

Eric Afful polled 15,809 votes representing 52.64 percent while his main contender who represented the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Derkye had 13,076 votes representing 43.54 percent.

The Electoral Commission held a by-election in the area on Tuesday following the death of the NDC MP John Gyatua.

The election was contested by four political parties comprising the NDC, NPP, PPP and UFP.

Abraham Kwadwo Buadee, stood on  the ticket of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Elvis Adjei, on the United Front Party’s (UFP) ticket.

Prior to the election, the NPP accused the NDC of vote buying in the constituency.

The NPP alleged that the NDC visit homes during the evenings and distribute fertilisers, machetes, among other goodies but the NDC refuted the claims.
