Newly elected National Chairman of the People’s National Convention, (PNC) Bernard Mornah, has told Citi News he will reach out to the party’s 2012 Presidential Candidate, Hassan Ayariga, over his decision to leave the party after his defeat in Saturday’s congress.
Mr. Ayariga was beaten by Dr. Edward Mahama, a 70 year old medical doctor who returned to the race after leading the party from 1996 to 2008.
The 2012 Presidential Candidate lost with 426 votes as Dr. Edward Mahama polled 492. Mr. Ayariga reduced the PNC’s votes in the 2012 elections polling just 0.22% of the total votes.
He has since the election announced his decision to leave the party claiming he was unfairly treated ahead of the congress and that PNC doesn’t deserve him.
But Mr. Monah says this is not the way to go.
“Today if he loses an election, I’m sure that it is just to say that the people want an alternative to his leadership. It is not to say that he is not one of us. I believe strongly that PNC is in Hassan Ayariga and Hassan Ayariga is PNC. Indeed his blood is PNC”.
Mr. Mornah assured he will work to resolve issues arising out of the party’s congress, to ensure unity going into the 2016 elections.
Describing Mr Ayariga as “a true member of our family” who has “gone up to become a flagbearer of our party”, he said it was prudent the party tapped into his experience for next year’s elections.
“No matter what he might have said, losing elections is bitter. But as the National Chairman, I will work with my senior brother. If there are any issues that he feels uncomfortable with, he will bring it to our attention”, Mr Mornah said, adding, “in my interaction with him, we will get to know what is it he thinks was an unfair treatment meted out to him and at the end of the day we should resolve it”.
Mr. Bernard Mornah however believes Dr. Edward Mahama; the party’s newly elected flagbearer, has enough experience to cause a stir in next year’s elections.
Meanwhile some members of the PNC has described Mr. Ayariga’s exit from the party as a blessing in disguise.
Some members have accused Mr. Ayariga of being in bed with the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Majority of them are also of the view that Mr. Ayariga’s posture badly affected the party’s image
