The chairman of the Ghana Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Kwabena Mensah Woyome, has backed assertions linking journalists to the perceived decline of the Ghana Premier League.
The domestic league has been widely chastised for lacking attractiveness, particularly in the quality of play and players, sponsorship, marketability as well as infrastructure.
The South Tongu Member of Parliament’s comments come on the back of recent accusations by the communications director of the Ghana Football Association, Ibrahim Sannie Daara, who partly blamed the media for the topflight’s slump.
“You sports journalists are making the league unattractive to all of us,” Woyome told Starr FM.
“You are not giving prominence to the competition but rather, giving foreign leagues and teams publicity.
“For example, in the past, a Hearts and Kotoko game was big in such a way that my father and his friends gather to discuss it always.
“But now, my little boy can’t even mention names of local players but can mention the starting line-up of Chelsea, and this is bad. You people [media] must wake up.”
The 2014-15 Ghana Premier League ended in September with Ashanti Gold claiming the ultimate.
However, the commencement of the 2015-16 season has been hit with delay due to disciplinary and sponsorship challenges.
