Tegucigalpa, Dec. 11, (GNA/dpa) – Honduran footballer Arnold Peralta was shot dead while on holiday in his hometown in the north of the country late Thursday, police said.

Witnesses heard shots in the parking lot of a shopping centre in La Ceiba, around 500 kilometres north of Tegucigalpa, and rushed out to find him lying near his car, witnesses were quoted as saying by local news reports.

Peralta, 26, was a midfielder, who earlier played for the Rangers Football Club in Scotland and joined Club Deportivo Olimpia in Honduras’s national league this year.

He had also joined the national squad and was due to play for the national team in a friendly against Cuba next week.

The gunmen fled on a motorcycle, reports cited witnesses as saying. Police said robbery was an unlikely motive as none of the victim’s belongings were taken.
