Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan
The Attorney General’s Department has reiterated that it has closed the docket on a rape and sodomy allegation made by Sarah Kwablah against Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan, citing inaccuracy and discrepancy in the evidence gathered as reasons.
The department has, therefore, disrecommended prosecution of Gyan, adding that the facts on the docket show that the complainant only set out to extort money from the suspect.
Both the Director of Public Prosecutions, Yvonne Attakorah and the PRO of the Attorney, General’s (AG) Department, Martin Owusu-Ansah, confirmed to the Graphic Sports yesterday that the docket on the case had been closed, refuting claims by Dr Maurice Ampaw, the legal representative of the complainant, that the case was still pending.
According to Mr Owusu-Ansah, a recommendation made by the AG Department’s Public Prosecution Unit stated that even though Gyan and Sarah had an affair for a couple of months after first meeting on Instagram on February 13, this year, there was not enough evidence to prove the alleged rape and unnatural carnal knowledge of the complainant.
“Sarah went ahead to report the case to the Ministries DOVSSU Police Station as rape and sodomy but earlier at the Odorkor Police Station both parties had agreed that the sexual relation they had was consensual,” the recommendation by the AG’s Department stated.
“A statement by Matthew Banahene, the landlord of Sarah, indicated that the mother of the complainant and one Ekow Micah had approached him several times to help them frame up the suspect and extort money from him.”
“Allegations of rape and sodomy were all part of the scheme to extort money so we disrecommend prosecution of the suspect,” it concluded.
Giving a chronology of the case, Mr Owusu-Ansah said Sarah informed Gyan in May that she was three months pregnant for which the football star accepted responsibility, but two separate scans done at different facilities proved that the complainant had been pregnant for a little over five weeks, which was less than what she claimed.
He said Gyan requested a DNA test which angered the lady and subsequently threatened to release videos of their sexual activities. But in a bid to avoid a scandal, the football star reported the case at the Odorkor Police Station where he was requested to provide the lady with a monthly allowance of GH¢2,000 while they waited for the DNA test.
According to the report, “Before the payment of the allowance, Dr Ampaw called the suspect and unilaterally increased the amount to $1,000 a month, an apartment and a maid, which he refused”.
