French-born Caen right-back Dennis Appiah says he’s open to representing Ghana should he be given a call-up.

The 23-year-old defender has been one of Ligue 1’s top performers, playing every minute of all 17 league games in Caen’s rise to the third spot on the league log.

Born to a Ghanaian father in Toulouse, Appiah has represented France at under-17, 18, 19 and 20 levels.

“Playing for Ghana is a question I often ask myself,” Appiah told AfriqueFoot, “but it’s the same situation with the France team.

“I have never been screened and no one ever contacted me. It’s not something that I really think about. The day it happens, I would ponder over it. I’m not completely closed to a call-up.

“But I’m not in the context of going to team as a mercenary; just to play, take the money and go. Earning a call-up is not only important to the players but also the country involved.”

The defender revealed that he’s tempted to follow in the footsteps of Ivory Coast’s Jean-Daniel Akpa-Akpro and Algeria’s Saphir Taidir, who have both played at the World Cup after switching allegiances to represent the countries of their heritage.

“They asked me why I had not joined Ghana’s team and I told them it’s because I have not been selected,” Appiah added.

“But all that, it will come when it will come. Jean-Daniel had two or three good seasons in Ligue 1 and more experience than me when Ivory Coast called him.

“A player with the opportunity to play at the World Cup will not miss it.”

Appiah, who joined Caen from Monaco in July 2013, has an assist to his name this season.
