A board member of Accra Hearts of Oak, Emmanuel Martey Commodore-Mensah, has resigned from the board with immediate effect, fuelling speculations that some cracks are beginning to emerge in the boardroom of the Phobians.

Mr Commodore-Mensah, one time board chairman of the club, tendered in his resignation letter weeks before the club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Accra last week. In the said letter he stated his decision to relinquish his membership of the board.

The decision came at a time when another board member, Afenu Apiigii, a representative of Africa Strategic Securities, the majority shareholders in the club, had earlier resigned from the board. Mr Apiigi has since been replaced by Thomas Esso, at the last AGM.

Mr Commodore-Mensah’s resignation, it had been rumoured, was as a result ofdeep-seated disagreement in the Hearts boardroom over the direction of the club.

But the former board member told the Graphic Sports yesterday that his resignation had nothing to do with any alleged disagreement with anybody on the board.

“I took the decision upon careful consideration of issues related to my long association with the management of the club, going back to the 1980’s as well as my health.

I decided to give up my position on the Hearts board to take a rest”, explained Mr Commodore-Mensah, who took over from Mr Ato Ahwoi as board chairman in 2005.

He disclosed that after over 30 years as a member of the board of Hearts, he was bowing out to give way to young generation.

According to him, he chose that particular time to hand in his resignation to the board in order for it to be tabled at the last AGM.

Unfortunately, it was not discussed [at the AGM]”, he said with regret.
