Black Stars coach Avram Grant has said that the team’s attacking and defensive capabilities have improved in his time in charge of the team.

Grant marked his first year in charge of the Black Stars with a press conference on Monday at the premises of the Ghana Football Association where he answered questions from journalists on several aspects of his job in Ghana.

He stated the team had made progress in an attacking sense but for him, the biggest improvement had been made in the defensive areas of the team. “I have seen improvements in our scoring because we scored 20 goals in ten official matches and I think it is good in modern football, defense is very important.

Before I came, the team conceded in almost every match and especially from set pieces. We spoke about it as a team and decided to work on it.” He continued: “In my first official match, we gave two goals away to Senegal. We conceded one in my third match but after that, we kept six clean sheets in seven official matches. We conceded a goal against Mauritius.

In football, you need to have the balance between scoring and defending so I think we have improved in that area. We have also move forward in terms of set pieces and we shared ideas on that.

We are not the tallest team in football but we scored against Mauritius with a set piece and that is very good.” Grant also spoke on how the Black Stars had progressed in terms of mentality.

He explained that the team focused on that during the pre-AFCON 2015 training camp and that aspect had also improved in the past year. Ghana will play against Mozambique in the 2017 AFCON qualifier in March 2016.
