Quality: Jordan Ayew is our new Benteke – Garde

Aston Villa boss Remi Garde believes Jordan Ayew can ease the loss of Christian Benteke and rekindle Aston Villa ‘s fading survival hopes.

The newly-appointed coach is searching for his first win with the club rooted to the bottom after successive losses to Everton and Watford.

The former Arsenal star’s side are struggling badly following the summer sales of top-scorer Benteke and captain Fabian

Delph to Liverpool and Manchester City respectively.

But Ghana forward Ayew, 24, has two goals in four games since Tim Sherwood was sacked.

And the former manager’s replacement is putting a lot of faith in the £8.4million summer signing from Lorient.

Ahead of Saturday’s crunch trip to Southampton, Frenchman Garde said: ‘Jordan can score goals, so can Scott Sinclair, Carles Gil and Rudy Gestede.

‘Sometimes you have a big striker who is a threat for opponents but sometimes you can split that between two or three players.

‘Jordan has good, strong ability to score as he showed  in the last game against Watford .

‘We have to work on that. It is his first Premier League season and he has done well to cope with the demands it has made on him, and hopefully he will score more.’

Villa’s start is the worst-ever by a Premier League team and they have been written off as virtual relegation certainties.
