The Ghana Naval Command has eulogized the great ancestor of the Dagbon Kingdom, Naa Gbewaa, by naming one of the two newly acquired warships after him.
The Chief Executive Officer of Gbewaa Civil Engineering Limited, Alhaji Yakubu Adam Kasuli, led a high powered delegation from the Naval Command to Yendi.
Lieutenant Commander Isaac Zim Aratuo at a colorful ceremony officially informed the Dagbon Regent, the Kampakuya-Naa Yakubu Abdulai about the decision.
According to him, the acquisition of the GNS Naa Gbewaa warship is to enhance the performance of the Ghana Navy fleet whose responsibility is to safeguard the nation’s territorial waters and particularly protect the oil installations.
Lieutenant Commander Isaac Zim Aratuo added that the ship will act as an at-sea boarding ship which will build partnership, share information and jointly train officers within Ghana and neighboring countries, to combat threats to maritime security.
“The roles of Ghana Navy are to address the nation’s maritime strategy and needs to protect its maritime resources, police its waters and ensure security at sea from a variety of threats, including piracy, drug trafficking, arms smuggling, dumping of toxic waste, illegal bunkering, illegal fishing, and pair trawling.”
The Dagbon Regent in a speech read on his behalf commended the Naval Command
and promised to deepen the relationship.
He said the honor had rekindled the spirit of the sons and daughters of Dagbon.
The Ghana Naval Command is expected to build a naval cadet corps at the Yendi Senior High School.
The team as part of the three-day visit organized clean-up exercise in some selected communities in Yendi, a football match and also painted the school block of the Naa Yakubu Junior Secondary School.
The Navy band climaxed the visit with a variety entertainment shows.
