Red Lions wins A Rocha football for water gala

Kyebi (E/R), Dec. 5, GNA – Red Lions colt’s football club defeated Vasco Da Gama FC by five goals to four on penalties to win the Atewa Football for Water Programme under 15 colt’s gala competition at Kyebi.

The match, which saw little chances being created by both teams, ended goalless after both teams failed to find the net in regulation time.

Six teams participated in the gala from the Atiwa District and East Akim Municipality namely, Royal Babies, Apedwa Rangers, Red Lions, Shinning Stars, Vasco Da Gama and Juasoman F/C and were drawn into two groups with all teams playing against each other.

Vasco Da Gama booked their ticket to the finals by beating Royal Babies by four goals to three on penalties in the semifinals whiles, Red Lions also walloped Apedwa Rangers by five goals to nil.

The winners of the tournament, Red Lions took home a trophy, a set of jersey, football and an undisclosed cash prize.

Vasco Da Gama for placing second, had first aid kits, football and cash prize, whiles the other participating teams were given a football each.

Addo Mills of Royal Babies was adjudged the best player of the tournament, whiles Desmond Adu of Red Lions won the top scorer award with four goals, with Juasoman F/C being adjudged the best behaved team.

Mr Emmanuel Akom, the Project Manager of A Rocha, a civil society group on afforestation said, the programme forms part of the “Living Water from the mountain” Project, which seeks to protect the Atewa water resources from illegal activities and create awareness for the footballers to use their skills to support efforts to stop illegal mining and logging of trees in the Atewa forest reserve.

He said the football clinic was organized for the teams to enlighten them on the types of football injuries and how to avoid them, rules of the game and other related activities in football.
