Dr Onsy Nathan Kwame Nkrumah
Dr Onsy Nathan Kwame Nkrumah, a Pan-Africanist, has declared his intention to contest the position of flag bearer of the Convention People’s Party (CPP).
His success at the CPP’s presidential primaries scheduled for next year will enable him to fulfil the desires of a considerable number of Ghanaians of diverse political affiliation, he told the Daily Graphic.
In an interview, Dr Nkrumah, who is one of the sons of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, said the time was up to accede to the incessant requests by Ghanaians, some of whom were in the diaspora, to come on board to offer the type of leadership that would unite Ghanaians and the CPP party, which is his father’s legacy for all.
He said what had given him the encouragement to announce his bid was the desire of Ghanaians of diverse religious, social, political and economic backgrounds to give him their mandate to be President in 2016.
Dr Onsy Nkrumah’s lineage to Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has been a subject of controversy but in July this year, the nephew of President Kwame Nkrumah and spokesperson of the extended family at Nkroful, (the late) Nana Bulumiatwum Kwasikutuah, declared that Onsy had been recognised as one of President Nkrumah’s six biological children.
According to Dr Nkrumah, his decision to contest the same position as Ms Samia Nkrumah, who is also a past chairperson of the party, would not result in any acrimony or splits in the party.
Rather, he said, the desire by many others to contest the position of flag bearer of the CPP was welcome, as that was in tandem with keeping with the democratic principles of the party.
Dr Nkrumah said his great desire was to offer a leadership of transparency, love and selfless service to the country to revive the visible development President Nkrumah begun years ago by, but whose tenure was cut short, thus preventing the completion of his plans for the country.
