The Minister for Agriculture, Fiifi Kwetey has promised that Ghana will soon be a hub for food security as the country celebrates Farmers’ Day

Speaking at the Farmers’ Day celebration at the Upper East regional capital, Bolgatanga, the Minister said the sector will experience sustained investments.

Some industry players in the agricultural sector had earlier questioned government’s commitment to developing it.

Government’s projection that the sector would grow by 3.6 per cent in 2015 was woefully missed as the sector recorded 0.04 per cent with a few weeks to end the year.

The agricultural sector’s contribution to the country’s GDP for 2015 is 19% compared to last years’ 21.5%.

Vice-Presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party has warned an acute shortage in the supply of staple crop, maize is imminent.

The 2015 National Farmers’ Day is commemorated each year on the first Friday of December to honour farmers and fishers in the country.

Farmers are awarded prizes at the various district and municipal levels and at the national level.

This year’s Farmers’Day which is the 31st edition was held at the Bolga SHS park.
