Kumasi, Dec. 3, GNA – The Management and playing body of Obuasi-based Ashgold S.C., have presented the 2014/2015 First Capital Plus Premier League trophy they won to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace, Kumasi.

The miners ended a19-year old drought by lifting last season’s trophy at the expense of their regional rivals, Asante Kotoko, who won the league for three consecutive seasons.

The contingent, made up of the Management, technical team and playing body, was led by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Cudoe Fianoe.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu lauded the team for achieving that enviable feat, and urged them to work assiduously to bring honour to the nation as they represent the country in the impending CAF Champions League.

‘I am happy that you have finally made it after many years of struggle to achieve the ultimate’, the Asantehene said.

He recalled the glory days of the Obuasi-based club, particularly in the middle of the1990’s, which saw the miners win the league for three consecutive times after the old version of the premier league assumed a professional status.

Ashgold, then spearheaded by the indefatigable Sir Sam Jonah, a business magnate and technocrat, became the first Ghanaian club to reach the finals of the newly-introduced CAF Champions League in 1997.

Since then, however, the miners had struggled to find their feet, going trophy-less for most seasons until they broke the jinx as they dethroned the Porcupine Warriors to lift last season’s trophy.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu reminded the team of the task ahead, saying that, they are expected to stay focused, train hard and demonstrate discipline on and off the field.

Mr. Fianoe said the Management had stepped up efforts, in terms of the training regime and motivation for the team, to help push Ashgold to greater heights in their endeavours.
