Coach Delneri called to rescue desperate Verona

Rome, Dec. 1, (GNA/dpa) – Verona on Tuesday signed Luigi Delneri as its new coach after the dismissal of Andrea Mandorlini, the Serie A club has said.

The squad, who sit last on six points, lost 3-2 at newcomers Frosinone Sunday, suffering their eighth defeat, with no wins, in 14 games.

Delneri, 65, began coaching in 1985 and gained fame at Chievo, a club from a Verona suburb, leading them to the top flight in 2001 and finishing fifth in the following season.

His following stint at then European champions Porto finished before the start of the 2004-05 season. He then took jobs at Roma and Palermo and later returned to Chievo, Atalanta, Sampdoria, Juventus and Genoa, who dismissed him after three months in January 2013.

Mandorlini, 55, took Verona from the Lega Pro, Italy’s third-level league, to the top flight between 2010 and 2013.
