Pressure is mounting on President John Mahama to pick a running mate for the 2016 general elections and to sidestep his right hand man Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur.
The Reform for Youth Empowerment, a group aligned to the governing NDC, has been waging a campaign to get a different person, who is capable of being the party’s flagbearer in 2020, to partner President Mahama for 2016.
“It is in this wisdom that we expect the president to name a new face as his running mate and anything short of this will be an indictment on his legacy within the great NDC party unless we think HE Amissah Arthur will be the party’s candidate in the 2020 elections of which we all know would not be the case,” the group said in a statement.
The Reform for Youth Empowerment is also asking the president to look outside the Central region, an area that has produced three Vice Presidents and a President for the party, in his choice of a running mate.

REFORM FOR YOUTH EMPOWERMENT
PRESIDENT MAHAMA MUST NOT DISSAPOINT THE RANK AND FILE OF THE NDC
Some few days ago, members of our great NDC went to the polls to vote massively for the President. The party is now assured of the person to lead our party, the NDC into the 2016 elections as a result of the general majority of the grassroots who have spoken through the power of the ballot.
By this expression the president must sustain the confidence of the grassroots who endorsed him by choosing a running mate that will receive a general acceptability from the rank and file of the party and appeal to Ghanaians.
In the discourse relating to running mate one is quick to point to the number of times the people of the Central region had their bite at the cherry.
Since 1992 the people of the Central region consistently featured into the equation till date. Ex President Rawlings was partnered by Arkaah and Professor Mills in 1992 and 1996.
Later on, Professor Mills became the number one and now H.E Amissah-Arthur the number two all from the Central region.
The question which readily comes to mind is why only the Central region. Other regions such as Brong Ahafo, Greater Accra, Volta and Eastern region can equally produce running mates for the party and anything short of this will not receive general acceptability from the rank and file of the party.
The President must not lose sight of the convention within our party where the vice president becomes the flagbearer of which he has been a strong beneficiary.
It is in this wisdom that we expect the president to name a new face as his running mate and anything short of this will be an indictment on his legacy within the great NDC party unless we think HE Amissah Arthur will be the party’s candidate in the 2020 elections of which we all know would not be the case.
We pray the almighty God give the president wisdom in his choice of running mate.
Long live Ghana.
Long live the great NDC.
