The Flag bearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, has indicated that every Ghanaian has the right to assess the competence level of the presidency.
Taking President John Dramani Mahama on for lambasting persons who described him as incompetent, the former First Lady stated that Ghanaians should not be gagged concerning issues about the presidency.
According to her, in a democratic dispensation, every individual had the right to share his or her views.
Addressing some party faithful during a ceremony for the acclamation of the party’s Volta Regional Executive members in Ho at the weekend, Mrs Rawlings maintained that ‘if it is incompetence, it is incompetence. You do not have to be a President before you can say the President is competent or incompetent’.
Using a ‘chop bar’ analogy to buttress her point, Mrs Rawlings said ‘if I go to a chop bar and the food is not nice, I can comment on it. I don’t need to be a ‘chop bar’ owner or a cook to comment’.
She observed that certain political leaders were using ‘flirtation’ and ‘divisive methods’ to cover up their incompetence.
Mrs Rawlings, who lamented over the use of tribal sentiments by these leaders to set tribes against one another in an effort to cover up their ineptitude, called on them to put a stop to that because that approach would only destroy the country they sought to govern.
She also accused Parliament under the Mills/Mahama administration as being the most corrupt as it had supervised some of the unspeakable crimes, including ‘monstrous corruption’ against the nation.
She, therefore, called on citizens to demand accountability from their leaders.
Mrs Agyeman Rawlings, who said she believed there was a need for a change and therefore the NDP was a better option for Ghanaians, challenged the new party executive to collaborate with other party members to bring the party’s objectives into fruition.
The acclamation ceremony saw Prince Mensah being affirmed as party chairman, with Theophilus Goka Kwaku as his vice; Abraham Adisa Attah, 2nd Vice; Promise Nuglo and Mercy Amedu as secretary and vice secretary respectively and Rebecca Gbolo, Melody Johnson and Perfect Nyadeva taking the Women leaders’ positions.
The rest were: Edem Hiagbe Dzanku as Director of Communications; Innocent Yaw Klodzi, Research and Monitoring Officer, with Richard Mekpa as his deputy.
The Acting General Secretary of the NDP, Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong, addressing party supporters, called on people in the region to massively endorse the party in the 2016 general election.
He said the Volta Region must reject the National Democratic Congress “World Bank” mantra, as their loyalty had not been honoured.
The newly acclaimed Volta Regional Chairman, Mr Mensah, in his response, gave the assurance that the new executive members would work assiduously in order to expand the fortunes of the party.
