A security task force together with the Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri, Frank Annor Dompreh and officials of the Environmental Protection Agency stormed the Nsawam area in an effort to clamp down on illegal sand mining activities there.
Mr. Annor Dompreh said the illegal sand miners aided by land guards are pushing farmers away from their lands.
He warned of imminent food insecurity and destruction to the environment if the activities of the sand miners are not checked.
He told Joy News, there should sustained efforts to address the problem.
“My area is becoming an attractive points to these people who have taken the laws into their hands,” he expressed worry
He said Parliament’s Committee on Lands and Forestry, a committee he is part of, has engaged complainants and land owners to attempt to resolve the matter but nothing substantive has been achieved.
On his visit to the area today, Dompreh said about 50 acres of land have been mined and destroyed.
He was even more worried with the institutional inertia being exhibited by Environmental Protection Agency and the National Security and hoped the two institutions will take the matter more seriously than they have done.
“We don’t need to just look at the environment situation but the food security matter.
“I see it as the next galamsey in our country. If we are not careful very soon we will not even have lands to plant on,” he warned.
