When names of rap artistes currently reigning in Ghana are mentioned, C- Real will certainly not come to mind but the “U Dey Lie” lyricist says he is the best rapper in the country and that he has no competitor in the rap game.
According to C- Real, born Cyril-Alex Gockel, artistes such as Trigmatic, M.anifest, D-Black and Jay So, who are regarded for their great rapping skills, are no match for him at all since he is the “best in the game”.
However, the self-acclaimed best rapper mentioned Sarkodie and EL as the only rappers who might be threats to his “title”.
“All the rappers mentioned above know what I can do. They know I am the best in this game. I am not afraid of them because I would have told them in their faces if they were here right now,” he said in an interview with Showbiz last week.
Asked why he is not a household name when it comes to rap in the country, C-Real, known for songs such as Chale We Dey and Reality Check explained, “It is not about just being popular but the most important thing is what you can do and I know what I’m made of. These guys are no match for me at all.
“I don’t do the popular music that the masses can identify with. It is difficult to break through as a hiphop rapper because that is not the style of Ghanaians. Sarkodie had his breakthrough with Baby and EL with Kaalu and you know both are not hiphop songs. I don’t want to toe that line. I want to do what I’m comfortable with which is hiphop,” he said.
Although he is not as popular as the other rappers in the system, C-Real’s music video for his song, I Be Swag, was nominated for 4syte Music Video Awards in 2011 for Best Hip Hop Video. The following year, he was nominated again at the 4Syte Music Video Awards with his song, Em.CEO.
C- Real, who has worked with E.L, Sarkodie, Lousika, Wanlov, Gemini and J Town A is product of the St. Peter’s Secondary School and the University of Ghana, Legon. He is currently in the studios working to release a new album by the end of the year.
