Parliament to hunt ‘missing’ $40million diabetes cash

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Health will soon begin investigation into circumstances surrounding the ‘disappearance’ of a $40 million grant meant for a national diabetes programme.

Investigations undertaken by Adom FMโ€™s Morning Show programme Dwaso Nsem, have revealed that in 2009, the World Diabetes Foundation provided a grant of 40million dollars to the National Diabetes and Research Center at Korle-bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

It was for a project called National Diabetes Program. The project was to enable the diabetes centre, headed by Prof. Albert Amoah, work to improve prevention and care for diabetes and related non-communicable diseases throughout the country.

In a series of programmes hosted by Captain Smart, it was revealed also that neither the projects nor the money can be traced while there have been inconsistent answers from Government officials who seem determined to sweep the issue under the carpet.

But another branch of government, the Legislature, has vowed to delve deep into the matter.

First to lead the charge was Hon Dr Twum Nuamah, MP for Berekum East, who promised last week to draw the attention of House’s committee on Health to the raging controversy.

Two days later, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Kyeremateng Agyarko pledged on Dwaso Nsem not to allow the matter to die an unnatural death.

โ€œThis is a serious matter. I will personally take this matter to Parliament and start probing itโ€ he said.

A week later, Berekum MP Dr. Twum Nuamh disclosed on Adom FMโ€™s Dwaso Nsem that Parliament has began investigations into the matter.

โ€œIโ€™m very pleased to tell Ghanaians that the diabetes issue is now on the floor of Parliament and I must say that we will delve very well into the issue and bring perpetrators of the act to bookโ€ he told Captain Smart.

He called on officials of the Health ministry to cooperate with parliament to unravel the mystery benind a good idea gone bad.
