Avenor demolition: AMA continues war against illegal settlements

Unabated wave of demolition of illegal settlements surfaced at Avenor in Accra leaving the displaced fuming at what they say was a short notice.

The Avenor demolition follows a much wider stretch of slum clearing at Sodom and Gomorrah that has also left several hundreds displaced.

Police cum military provided the security needed for four excavators to clear the settlements along the railway.

The residents shocked at the exercise throngs to the premises of Multimedia to draw national attention to their plight.

Peeved, the residents say they were not given enough notice to re-locate. A displaced man told Joy News, the security officials “didn’t even allow us to take the goods out”.

They also accused the military of physically abusing them while they tried to salvage their properties.

Facing a bleak future, a woman demanded answers from the AMA: “I just want them to tell us the main reason why they are sacking us.”

But an official of the AMA told Joy News the residents have been served several notices spanning over years and would therefore not wait for another disaster before undertaking the exercise.

“They themselves know that it is illegal so I don’t have to tell them to leave,” he said.
