NDPC Briefs Speaker Of Parliament And Chief Justice….On Ghanas Long-Term Development Plan

The Director-General of the National Development Planning Commission, Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, has briefed the Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable Doe Adjaho, and the Chief Justice, Mrs. Georgina Theodora Woode, on the launch on 4 August 2015 in Accra of preparations for Ghana’s long-term development plan.

Briefing the Speaker and the Chief Justice during separate courtesy calls, Dr. Thompson said that the fact that an entire chapter of the Constitution Review Commission’s report of 2011 was devoted to calls by Ghanaians for a long-term national development plan means that the country is ready to take a longer view of national development and anticipate and address problems before they occur.

Dr. Thompson stated that the long-term national development plan, which is expected to span 40 years (2018-2057), “will be flexible enough for any government to draw up its own medium-term plans towards achieving the vision and goals of the plan, which are based on the Constitution and in particular, the Directive Principles of State Policy”.

He was accompanied by some Commissioners of the Commission, including Dr. Samuel Nii-Noi Ashong, former Deputy Finance Minister in the Kufuor administration and current chairman of the Commission’s Economic Policy Committee; Mr. Eben Anuwa Amarh; and Dr. David Millar, Vice-Chancellor/Rector of Millar Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies and chairman of the NDPC Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Dr. Thompson presented NDPC souvenirs to the Speaker and Chief Justice to serve as a reminder of the Commission’s ongoing attempts at rebranding and making itself more visible and accessible to the public.

The Chief Justice appealed for the judiciary to be included in the national infrastructure plan as most of the courts built about 40 years ago are in deplorable state across the country.

She was quick to add that the late President Atta Mills, during his tenure got the judiciary an edifice which has 42 courtrooms which it will be occupying soon.

She stated her confidence in the future despite the challenges facing the nation.

Both the Speaker and the Chief Justice commended NDPC for the initiative shown and the hard work so far and supported its efforts to get all hands on deck.

In his concluding remarks, the Speaker reiterated that it is essential to involve the people and the political leaders in the whole process in order for the long-term development plan to come to fruition.
