Bridge collapses at Amasaman; Truck driver feared dead

A tipper truck driver is feared dead after his vehicle sunk into the Densu River. The truck, loaded with sand was moving from Amasaman to Ashalaja around 7:30 last night when the accident occurred.

A bridge linking Aikai Dobulo in Amasaman Municipality and Ashalaja , apparently too weak to withstand the weight of the sand, collapsed, sinking the truck and its driver instantly.

A driverโ€™s mate, was lucky enough to escape but his master is feared drowned.

Myjoyonline.comโ€™s David Andoh who is at the scene, says the vehicle is completely submerged because the water level in the river is high in the wake of recent rains.

Officers of the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, he said, are currently at the scene using canoes and trying to locate the vehicle.

David Andoh reported that the Amasaman Municipal Assembly is completely cut off from the Ga South District making it impossible for commuters to cross from Aikai Dobulo in the Amasaman side to Ashalaja in the Ga South Municipality.

The District Chief Executives of both Amasaman and Ga South are currently at the scene and so is the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo.
