Talensi by-election: Police intercepts AK-47, other weapons at Tongo

Security officials monitoring the ongoing by-election in Talensi in the Upper East region have arrested a Ford van with an AK-47 rifle, a machete and other weapons heading for Tongo, capital of the Talensi constituency.

The vehicle with registration number UE-16-13 was just about entering the Tongo community Tuesday when it was accosted by the heavy security detail which has been dispatched to the area due to the elections there.

About 39,523 registered voters are expected to vote in the by-elections.

Political watchers and pollsters have tipped the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to recapture the seat it has dominated for over 20 years until the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) snatched it in the 2012 general elections.

The by-election is a straight fight between the NDC’s BT Baba and Thomas Duanab of the NPP. The poll has become necessary following the enskinment of the MP for the area Robert Nachinab Mosore as chief of the Tolon traditional area.
