A gala competition in honour of the late Cecil Jones Attuquayefio would be organised at the Carl Reindorf Park at Dansoman in Accra next week Saturday, July 18.

The gala will involve 20 teams from the Greater Accra Region, comprising retired footballers teams such as Liberty Oldies, New Town Oldies, Scarp Rangers Oldies, Tema Oldies, La Oldies and Teshie Oldies and will see many retired national stars in action.

According to the chairman of the Retired Old Footballers Association of Ghana (RENFAG), Alhaji Ibrahim Sunday, retired stars such as Dan Owusu, Mohammed Polo, Awule Quaye, Wullie Klutse, Osei Kofi, Emmanuel Armah, Yaw Preko and Abedi Ayew Pele will feature prominently for their respective teams.

Alhaji Sunday, who captained and later coached Kumasi Asante Kotoko to win the African Clubs Championship titles in 1971 and 1983 respectively, told the Daily Graphic in an interview, that much prominence had been attached to the upcoming gala due to the key role played by the late Attuquayefio in developing Ghana football as a player, coach and administrator.

“Aside the role he played in developing soccer as a player, he was also a force to be reckoned with in coaching and succeeded in nurturing many players in the country.”

“He was also an executive member of the Retired Old Footballers Association and an organising member of the Retired Oldies League,” he said of the former coach of the Black Stars, Great Olympics, Hearts of Oak and Liberty Professionals.

Ahead of the gala, the RENFAG chairman said members of the Retired Oldies League would hold an emergency meeting at 11 a.m. on Saturday to plan the competition.
