Lamp For Future Life in collaboration with Nefeli plastic waste management project and Imperial Hubon Friday 26th June, 2015 organized a conference on the topic“plastic waste; challenges and potentials in Ghana”at the premises of Christ apostolic church international, Kasoa-Ofaakor within the Awutu Senya East Municipality in the Central Region, Ghana.
The conferencewas aimed at educating Directors from Local Government Agencies including National Commission for Civic Education, Environmental Health & Sanitation Unit, Social Welfare, Teachers and some schoolchildren in Ghana on the Challenges and Potentials of plastic waste management in Ghana to ensure proactive actions towards addressing challenges with plastic waste in the country.
Over 80 participants who attended the conference included 2 students from the Department of Earth & Environment- University for Development Studies, 2 students from thePhysics Department- University of Cape Coast,NefeliSkoufou –a biology student at Imperial College London, 5 government agency directors, 55 students,10 teachers, 1 local NGO director and 5 local volunteers.
The participantswere taken through Key lessons including the effects of plastic waste on health, environment, and socio-economic development. They also learnt how plastic waste could be used in building houses, roads, generating power, making plant pots among others.
Speaking on the topic, Dr. Nana Ama Browne Klutse(Ghana Atomic Energy Commission) noted that plastic waste constituted 8% of waste in Ghana as at the year 2000 and it is estimated to be eight times currently.
Mr. PadmoreQuansah, Director of Program at Lamp For Future Life, added that the organization is working with the National Commission for Civic Education with technical support from Dr. Nana Ama Browne Klutse (Ghana Atomic Energy Commission ) and NefeliSkoufou –a biology student at Imperial College of London to expand the project to include school outreach lectures, distribution of informative leaflets, competition and awards for the youth to come up with innovative products from plastic waste.
