Parliament must have a big heart and forgive Blakk Rasta – Baaku, Fuseini

Editor in Chief of the Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kwaku Baako Jnr, together with Roads and Highways Minister, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, have made passionate appeals to Parliament to forgive controversial reggae musician Blakk Rasta for his contemptous comments.

The two believe that the apology by Blakk Rasta, who is also the host of Taxi Driver on Hitz FM, is genuine and deserves to be forgiven.

Blakk Rasta, known in real life as Abubarkar Ahmed, appeared before Parliament’s Privileges Committee last Thursday after he alleged in an interview on Hitz FM that 80 per cent of MPs smoke wee.

“The utterances were unfortunate. They came on the spur of the moment. I was on heat,” Blakk Rasta told the Privileges Committee of Parliament in a live broadcast of proceedings after he was summoned for bringing the name of the House into disrepute.

But some MPs were not convinced that the apology rendered by the Hitz FM presenter was ‘genuine’ enough to be forgiven.

Two Volta Regional MPs, National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Ho West Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzra and NDC MP for North Dayi George Loh are leading a crusade to have Blakk Rasta punished to set an example that Parliament must be respected.

Kwaku Baako, speaking on Joy FM/MultiTV’s news analysis programme, Newsfile Saturday, urged Parliament to have a big heart and forgive Blakk Rasta.

He said, “Parliament, because of its connection, its proximity to the people when it comes to the representation principle, whilst it has powers and authority to do certain things, must also have a big heart,” to forgive.

The editor was of the view that, Blakk Rasta “made absolutely reckless statement no doubt about that, I don’t think that is in dispute. With all the twists and turns even at the committee level when the tape was played and it was so manifest that he has said what had been attributed to him, he gave up and apologised.”

“I think he showed enough sensitivity to the issue at stake. It mitigated the offence and it’s only a plea to Parliament that…why go to the extreme with this maybe this will serve as a deterrent to others. So it’s just a personal plea that I am making and I believe Parliament will be better served if it shows that it has a big heart,” he urged.

Alhaji Inusah Fuseini, who is also a Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale Central, commenting on the issue said he will advocate for the ‘Barack Obama’ hit singer to be forgiven.

“I will advocate that he be forgiven. He’s shown enough remorse. The compelling arm of parliament has been exerted on him. He has appeared and because he had not appeared before parliament before, he still was holding tenaciously to what he had said and trying to [be] defensive. Appearing before parliament he was confronted with the magnitude of the problem…he apologised.”
