Political parties contesting in the Talensi by-election scheduled for July 7 have intensified their campaign activities across the Talensi constituency in the Upper East Region.
Some are attending almost every event in the area, including even a Second Division match between Tongo Barcelona and FC Tanga on Thursday, June 25, 2015.
The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) is bent on recapturing the seat John Akologo Tia occupied for 20 years and lost to the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament, Robert Mosoro Doameng, in 2012.
The New Patriotic Party, led by the parliamentary candidate, Thomas Duanab Wuni, is doing more of house-to-house campaigning in short convoys and hoping to improve on the performance of the former Member of Parliament (MP), who is now the Paramount Chief of the Talensi Traditional Area.
The People’s National Convention’s (PNC’s) candidate, Dr Michael Wombengo, is also hoping to improve on his 2012 performance to annex the seat.
Dr Wombengo believes that with John Akologo Tia and Mosoro Doameng out of the way, his chances are brighter than the NDC and NPP candidates, both of whom are new in the race.
Being first timers, therefore, the NDC and the NPP candidates are each counting on the popularity of their parties and their personal contributions to the development of the constituency to win the seat.
Even though the National Democratic Congress seems very visible and loud for obvious reasons, there are indications that some persons from within the party will thwart the efforts of the party at getting Mr Benson Tongo Baba into Parliament.
DAILY GUIDE has learnt that some influential people in the party within and outside the Talensi constituency are still peeved over some comments made against some aspirants at the primary grounds.
What seems to infuriate many NDC members and functionaries in the Talensi constituency is a portion of the Deputy National Organiser, Joseph Akamba’s speech which they said gave Benson Tongo Baba undue advantage over the other contestants.
Meanwhile, Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party, who claims her party is contesting the by-election, is hardly seen in the constituency. Rather, she has been very visible at the Regional Coordinating Council in Bolgatanga.
It is not clear what she is doing there; but some political watchers think Akua Donkor and her party are just there to do another political party’s bidding in exchange for logistics.
