President presents 10,000 sandals to deprived schools

Ada Foah (GR), June 22, GNA – In fulfillment of his promise to school children, President John Dramani Mahama on Monday presented 10,000 school sandals to be distributed to deprived schools throughout the country.

The sandals are meant to match up with the free school uniform that government is already distributing to the deprived school children throughout the country.

In May 2014 President Mahama during an inspection tour of the rejuvenated Defense Industrial Holdings Company (formerly GIHOC shoe factory) in Kumasi, promised to produce sandals from the factory for deprived school children.

Addressing the gathering at Ada Foah, President Mahama said government would continue to invest in school children to achieve 100 per cent enrollment.

He said enrollment figures are about 95 per cent throughout the country thereby achieving the Millennium Development Goal on child enrollment at the basic levels of all schools.

President Mahama said he is delighted that all the sandals were produced from a local factory, which would not only be cheaper but would create job opportunities for Ghanaians.

He said apart from the school sandals, government would also distribute 30,000 laptop computers, 500,000 school uniforms, 15 million exercise books and six million textbooks to schools.

The President promised to roll out more social interventions that would encourage parents to send their children to school.

Mr Alex Kyeremeh, Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Basic Education said government would also continue to provide infrastructure to make the children comfortable in school.

He announced that the free education for senior high school day students would begin in September this year.
