The immediate past Member of Parliament for Talensi in the Upper East Region, Robert Dachinab Mosore, who resigned last week as a Member of Parliament following his enskinment as the paramount chief of Tongo Traditional Area, made a triumphant entry into Parliament to officially bid his colleagues farewell.
The rules of the House were relaxed for such an occasion since it was the first time in the history of the Fourth Republic that an MP had been elevated to the position of paramount chief.
In his farewell address, the former Talensi MP, now addressed as the Tongoranaa, said he was privileged to serve as a Member of Parliament for two and half years for the people of Talensi.
“Mr Speaker, as a first timer in Parliament, my two and half years in this august House have been very enlightening and challenging. Although the experience in my previous public service at the Tema Oil Refinery proved useful, I have come to appreciate that the task of a legislator is not only unique but also demanding and daunting,” he said.
He expressed his gratitude to the Speaker and the leadership of the House for their guidance, admonition, encouragement and support.
He said even though he came to Parliament on the ticket of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), as a paramount chief he is now a member of all political parties and father to all.
“I know the by-election in my constituency would be taking place very soon. I am prepared to receive all political parties warmly to my palace and share ‘pito’ with them,” he said to a huge ‘yeah, yeah’ from MPs.
He pleaded with members of the House to expedite the passage of the Chieftaincy Bill which will help in giving more recognition and power to chiefs to ensure speedy development.
He also pleaded with government to improve the conditions of service of parliamentarians since Ghanaians expect them to develop their respective constituencies.
The MP for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, congratulated the new paramount chief on his elevation and expressed hope that he would use his new position to promote development in his traditional area, especially in the area of education and healthcare.
The MP for Sekondi, Papa Owusu-Ankomah, also said it was important for Ghanaians, especially politicians, to respect the institution of chieftaincy and customs and traditions of the country.
He said countries like China and Japan and other Eastern Asian countries have seen tremendously development because alongside their laws, they very much respect their customs.
The MP for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, also noted that the new paramount chief distinguished himself well as a new MP, showing a lot of respect to his fellow MPs.
He expressed hope that he would continue to show respect to all his subjects and be willing to receive politicians from all political parties.
