The Accra Metropolitan Assembly demolished structures at Sodom and Gomorroah they were not supposed to, Deputy Local Government Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye has admitted.
According to him, the AMA went beyond the demarcation it agreed with the residents for demolition.
He explained prior to the demolition, the AMA met with the residents during which it was agreed that only structures 50 meters away from the Odaw River would be demolished.
However on the day of the demolition, houses as far as 300 meters away from the river were all demolished.
The Deputy Minister said the machines used for the demolition could not be manipulated to meet the 50 meter promise made to the residents.
This has caused a lot of anger among the residents, he admitted, adding the AMA has duly apologised for it.
Nii Lante Vanderpuye said the AMA has resolved to, with the help of NADMO and national security find a place for the homeless people, the aged, children and pregnant women to lay their heads.
They have also agreed to transport those who would voluntarily go back home to the Northern Region where most of them came from.
On the issue about water supply to the area, Nii Lante Vanderpuye said water has not been disconnected to the area because it is the fasting period and the residents most of whom are Moslims would need water to perform ablution.
He also hinted that the AMA was not done with the demolition and would soon return to demolish some structures.
