Former Asokwa Member of Parliament, Kofi Jumah, who was defeated in the recently-held Asokwa New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries, has appealed to the party’s flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and other party stalwarts to annul the polls in the constituency.
Without mincing words, he described the poll as a sham, adding that ‘basic tenets of free and fair elections were thrown to the dogs,’ so the results should be quashed.
This was contained in a petition authored by the MP to the NPP General Secretary on June 14, 2015, with copies to Nana Akufo-Addo, NPP National Executives and other party bigwigs – a copy of which DAILY GUIDE had sighted.
According to him, Madam Patricia Appiagyei’s, (the incumbent MP’s) victory at the poll should not stand, because an undertaking signed by him and Madam Appiagyei before the Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, was not adhered to.
Kofi Jumah, it would be recalled, was placed behind bars by the Asokwa police when was arrested for allegedly tearing an electoral paper some few minutes before the election were about to start on Saturday, February 13, this year.
The election, which was delayed for several hours, was eventually conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC) in the absence of Kofi Jumah and Madam Appiagyei won handsomely.
Kofi Jumah claimed that election materials were not inspected and verified since he and his agents were not present, and also some eligible voters were not allowed to enter the venue to exercise their franchise and unauthorized people were accredited and voted.
Mr Kofi Jumah alleged again that some unknown people voted in the place of eligible delegates, adding that sorting and counting of ballots were done without him, neither were his agents present.
He concluded, ‘A grand conspiracy scheme had been put together by the constituency executives, the handpicked Council of Elders, Council of Patrons, the Electoral Commission representatives and the police, to put aside the will of the delegates of Asokwa.
‘A properly organized and supervised election that will reflect the will of the constituency must immediately be put in place. Indeed, it will be in the interest of our party to do that immediately to forestall mass defections to the opposition.’
