A woman lost her life while another got severely injured when a Mercedes Benz tipper truck believed to be over-speeding reportedly ran over them on the George Walker Bush (NI) Highway at Kwashieman, a suburb of Accra.
The dead has been identified as Elizabeth Borkor, 35, while Francis Manson, 30, also got seriously injured.
An eyewitness account at the scene indicated that the tipper truck, with registration number GT 6671 S and fully loaded with chippings, was from Awoshie junction area and heading towards Abeka Lapaz.
The eyewitness said a police officer who was directing traffic at the Kwashieman interchange signaled the vehicles on the highway to stop for others on the other side to cross the road.
The tipper driver, identified as Joseph Boame, who was purportedly driving at top speed, upon seeing that the road was clear and the traffic light had turned green, tried to stop but the vehicle veered off its lane to the adjacent lane on the right, knocking down pedestrians attempting to cross the road in the process.
Meanwhile, ASP Abdulai Mumuni, commanding officer in-charge of the Odorkor Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) who was at the scene of the accident with his men, said the incident occurred around 8;30 am yesterday.
He said ‘Because of the traffic situation at that section of the road, a police officer is always deployed there to control traffic flow – whether there is power outage or not.’
The police officer directing the traffic, according to the MTTD commander, signaled drivers from Awoshie junction direction to stop to pave way for vehicles from Santa Maria to also move.
The driver, who was over-speeding while approaching the traffic lights, tried to stop but his brakes failed and so the vehicle veered off the road, hitting a traffic light pole.
At that time the victims were also standing on the pavement close to the traffic light, wanting to cross the road and were knocked down.
Madam Elizabeth Borke died on the spot but Francis Manson was severely injured.
Families of the deceased have since been informed of the news as the body has been deposited at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital awaiting autopsy, while the injured is on admission at the same health facility receiving treatment.
Joseph Boame, the tipper truck driver, has since been provisionally charged with careless and inconsiderate driving, and negligently causing harm. He would be sent to court soon.
