Royal support: Asantehene accepts Appiah’s invite to Testimonial game

Former Black Stars captain Stephen “Tornado” Appiah on Wednesday, paid a courtesy call on His Royal Majesty, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at his palace in Manhyia, in Kumasi.

The call was to formally extend an invitation to the highly respected king to attend the Dinner and Testimonial Match in Accra and Kumasi on 26 and 27 June, in honour of the former Black Stars captain, after retiring from active football.

Appiah, who was accompanied to the palace by officials of Primeval Media, organisers of the two events said he could not organise such a programme without informing the great king.

“You played a very key role for the Black Stars when I was the captain of the team. Your frequents visits to camp any time we had a match in Kumasi was enough inspiration for us,” Stephen Appiah told the Asantehene.

“Your presence alone in camp was enough to see us through most our matches and it was no surprise we qualified for the 2006 World Cup in Germany,” the former Black Stars skipper explained in front of the huge gathering.

“I am therefore extending a formal invitation to you to be part of this event and grace the occasions for us,” Appiah appealed.

Appiah, was given the traditional chorus that signifies acceptance of his invitation at the palace.

The former Black Stars captain is expecting a large number of football stars within and outside the continent to participated in his much awaited Testimonial Match at the Accra Sports Satdium next week Sunday.
