Quit the use of Concoction for Abortion-Pharmacist advises

A Pharmacist at the Regional Hospital, Sunyani Mathew Osei Gyasi has indicated that it is advisable for pregnant women to seek proper counseling services before undergoing abortion to avoid complications.

According to Mr. Osei Gyasi, lack of proper counseling could lead to the use of concoctions and attending to the services of quack practitioners thereby resulting to complications and sometimes deaths.

He acknowledged that unsafe abortion is a contributing factor to the increasing rate to maternal deaths in the country, which is a major challenge to achieving the MDG5, hence the need for Safe Abortion Campaign.

Mr. Osei Gyasi was speaking on the topic; abortion, unsafe abortion and post abortion care at a training workshop for in and out-of school volunteers organized by Global Media Foundation (GLOMEF) under the sponsorship of Safe Abortion Advocacy Fund (SAAF) in Sunyani.

He said abortion could be infected so pregnant women should not hesitate to seek medical attention for treatment.

The Pharmacist entreated pregnant women to desist from the use of concoctions and other drugs to terminate pregnancies, but rather seek the services of licensed Service providers to ensure safe abortion that is complication free.

On the laws of Ghana concerning abortion, Mr. Osei Gyasi insists the laws must be reviewed to make abortion totally legal so that people can have the courage to access qualified practitioners to undergo successful abortion when needed.

He commended GLOMEF for championing the fight to ensure total legalization of abortion in the country to help save lives and reduce maternal deaths.

Mr. Gyasi added that when abortion is fully legalized, it would be easier for Ghana to achieve its target of the MDG5.
