An angry mob caused extensive damage to property belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) after they stormed the power supply company’s office at Effiduase in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday.
The community had been plunged into total darkness for three days and this infuriated the residents who armed with stones and other offensive items attacked the ECG office.
The angry mob reportedly pelted the ECG office with stones, causing destruction to a billboard, the security post of the company and other items. All this happened around 11am when staff of ECG were at work.
ECG Manager of Effiduase, Agyabeng Jonathan who was certainly alarmed by the unannounced attack, said the ECG had to call in the police to disperse the angry mob.
According to him, the three-day power outage in the area was not intentional, attributing the long darkness to a major fault which occurred at Anloga in Kumasi.
He said he tried to explain the cause of the mishap to the angry mob but they would not listen.
Mr Agyabeng said the mob, after the police sent them away, threatened to return and cause further destruction if power supply to the area was not restored on that day.
Daily Guide gathered that for fear of suffering another mob attack, armed policemen including those who were called from Kumasi to assist their colleagues at Effiduase had to stay overnight to provide security at the ECG office.
Ashanti Regional ECG Public Relations Manager, Erasmus Kyere Baidoo, who was infuriated about the attack, said the ECG would close the office down if the attacks continued.
He explained that an excavator which was removing the trunk of a felled tree at Anloga Junction accidentally damaged the cables of ECG, resulting in the fault that plunged Effiduase into darkness for three days.
Mr Baidoo said ECG staff were busily working on rectifying the fault when from nowhere the mob attacked the company’s Effiduase office, causing massive destruction to the company’s property.
The ECG PR Manager admonished the public, especially those who have concerns about the operations of the ECG, to lodge their complaints at the ECG office instead of attacking the company.
