No emergency shelter for flood victims 4 days after Mahama’s promise

There are no emergency shelters at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra four days after the president promised to have them built immediately for thousands displaced by floods.

The President had promised hours after touring the disaster site Thursday that the military and NADMO will collaborate to put up the shelters.

“We can expect more rains over an extended period of time. It requires proper emergency services planning to ensure any challenges that occur are effectively tackled. Accordingly, the NADMO and the Ghana Armed Forces will be providing and setting up emergency shelter zones within affected areas to provide refuge for persons displaced by the flooding”.

It has been four days since.
But NADMO coordinator for Osu Klottey has explained that there is no place within the deprived area to build any emergency shelters.

The floods have rendered the area an enclave of deprivation with residents in dire need of basic support.

Some of the displaced have been sleeping in the open with mattresses and mosquito nets given out by NADMO and other public-spirited organisations and volunteers.

Many more in still in need of supplies – bowls, cups, water, food, medical care, mattresses and mosquito nets.

NADMO estimates that about 8,000 persons have been affected by the disaster.
